A couple months ago, Josh was up late catching up on DVR shows. I wasn’t feeling well so I had gone to be early. The girls were watching with him when they watched the pitch for an all-natural deodorant. Since I have tried many over the years (and have tried to make my own), they knew that I’d be interested.
The product is called PiperWai and is the creation of two childhood best friends. Jess and Sarah were on the hunt for a deodorant that was free of toxins but they didn’t like anything that was on the market. Jess began working on different formulas and the pair knew they had found the winning recipe when Sarah emerged from a trip to South America stink-free!
I won’t go in into all of the reasons why people are turning away from traditional deodorants but I will say that I don’t like them. Back in the day, you could buy a deodorant without antiperspirant in it and I loved that. I feel like our bodies sweat for a reason and I’m leery of anything that blocks a normal bodily function. Am I judging people who love Dove or Right Guard? Absolutely not! I’m just making a choice that feels right for me based on how I feel and what I’ve read.
Some of the things that people have said about traditional deodorants include:
- Blocking the ability to sweat from breast tissue may increase the risk of cancer
- Parabens commonly found in antiperspirants may be linked to breast cancer
- Alumimum, a very common ingredient, blocks sweat ducts in an unhealthy way
Again, I encourage everyone to do their own research and come to their own conclusions. This is not a site about scolding or shaming people (or about making decisions for you)!
That being said, if you are in the market for a fresh, natural deodorant, I have to suggest PiperWai! I ordered it back in December and it took until last week to get here because demand is so high. On their website, it currently says that they are backordered so deliveries are taking 2-4 weeks! Good for them! It’s always nice to see entrepreneurs doing well while trying to make a difference!
With so many great brands on the market, why should you give this particular one a chance? Well, if you have something that works for you, stick with that but, if you’re like me and start getting pretty stinky after a couple of hours while wearing Jason or Tom brand deodorant, here are some reasons (adapted from their site) to try PiperWai:
- Does not contain aluminum compounds, parabens, triclosan, or phthalates
- Absorbs moisture and neutralizes odor
- Gentle on the most sensitive skin, even after shaving
- Contains super absorbent activated charcoal
- Has a fresh, gender-neutral scent
First of all, it comes in a little jar which is a bit of a drawback. Almost no one would argue with the fact that being able to use a stick form would be much easier but, really, it’s a minor issues. First World problems! The paste is firmly packed in so you will have to dig in with your finger a little or use a cosmetic spatula.
It smells amazing and… familiar? I can’t quite put my finger on it so, if someone out there has smelled something like PiperWai before, please help me solve the mystery! Truth be told, though, the scent goes away fairly quickly. I would say that, when I sniff my armpits an hour later, I can barely detect it. Instead, my skin just smells incredibly neutral. Like nothing at all. It’s so weird but it lasts all day! I have gone a full 24 hours without reapplying and was just fine!
A pea sized amount for each armpit is more than enough. I have found that if I just let the product stay on my fingertip for five seconds, it warms it up enough to spread it on smoothly and easily. Otherwise, a little flaking does occur. I keep my underarms relatively hair-free so I have no idea what it would be like with stubble or full hair but the overwhelmingly positive reviews I’m seeing on the internet (and the fact that they remain backordered) suggests that people are loving it.
Honestly, the only thing that would make this better is if I didn’t have to use my fingers to put it on. Aside from that, I feel fresh, it’s not sticky or pasty and it keeps me dry and stink-free. Quite a feat for a woman in her second trimester with twins!
Still want to know more about PiperWai? I couldn’t find the clip of them on Shark Tank but I did find this video on their official Youtube channel (which is sorely lacking! It needs more videos!).
