I am closing in on 40 years old but I refuse to “grow up.” I see a lot of women share pictures of their home on social media and, at times, I will wistfully look at their immaculately (maturely!) designed homes and wish that I could be more like them.
And then reality sets in and I realize that I’m not ready for grey and beige (which I also love!). I am still too much of a nerd for that. We are going to do a four-part series sharing our progress as we decorate our home on a budget!
Decide on Themes
So, what does that mean for our new home? Fortunately, Josh is a big nerd and the kids are completely on board! While it might be easy to just fill our home with every piece of nerdy goodness we can find, we’ve decided to settle on themes in each room.
- Kitchen and Bath – Star Wars
- Living Room – Harry Potter
- Master Bedroom – Doctor Who
Joshua hasn’t decided what to do in his room but Hayley is going with anime while Caleb is all about Mickey Mouse.
Free Printables and Posters
Search Pinterest for some free printables. This works whether you are doing something nerdy or more traditional. Head to an Ikea and find some cheap frames and presto!
These ones will be going in the master bathroom above the towel rack.
These ones will be going into the main bathroom that the kids share:
Just like Harry Potter was hunting for horcruxes, we’ve been hunting for the right posters and wall art and found this for the living room:
I took a cheap pillow I bought at Walmart and cut it in half. I then sewed up both cut sides so that I ended up with two smaller pillows.
I found some great Harry Potter fabric on sale at Jo-Ann and am in the process of making throw pillow covers. I will update you on my progress but this is what I’ve got so far!
Does your home have an unorthodox style? If so, please share in the comments! I’d love to hear about it!
